Jingzhou News Network (Reporter Wang Feng, Zhou Yuji) – Commemorative coins are not unfamiliar to many people. They are legal currency issued by the country at a specific time, and they not only have intrinsic monetary value but also offer great potential for collectors to build valuable collections.
Yi Fayun, a resident of Jingnan Road, has a unique passion for collecting commemorative coins and notes. He recalls that in 1997, he first became interested in the Hong Kong Reunification commemorative coin, which he found to be beautifully designed. He asked his friends to purchase a set for him from the market. Since then, his enthusiasm for collecting coins grew rapidly. After over a decade, he had gathered more than 65 different types of commemorative coins, with a total collection exceeding ten thousand pieces.
China's modern gold and silver commemorative coin series began in 1979 with the first set issued to mark the 30th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. Over the past 31 years, this collection has evolved into a rich and diverse range, featuring more than 10 series and over 1,500 titles. These coins cover a wide array of themes—major political events, historical figures, sports, giant pandas, rare animals, Chinese zodiac signs, and world heritage sites. Each coin reflects a part of China’s five-thousand-year civilization and its deep cultural roots.
Among these, Yi Fayun particularly highlights a special piece known as the "Currency King"—a commemorative coin celebrating the first anniversary of the establishment of the People's Bank of China. He managed to obtain it through a friend in Shanghai, considering it one of the most valuable in his collection. For him, each coin is not just a piece of metal, but a story, a memory, and a connection to history.
