The printing and dyeing industry must pass two thresholds

After the textile industry adjustment and revitalization plan was approved by the State Council executive meeting, the reporter had an exclusive interview with Li Jinbao, chairman of the China Printing and Dyeing Industry Association. When asked about the impact of the revitalization plan on the printing and dyeing sector, Li emphasized that new central investments should be directed toward specific projects aimed at supporting technological advancements in printing and dyeing, textile machinery, and chemical fiber industries. He also highlighted the importance of accelerating the elimination of outdated production capacities and improving access standards to phase out high-energy-consuming and polluting equipment. These measures are seen as highly practical steps for guiding the industry’s sustainable development. Industrial upgrading and innovation are key to overcoming current challenges. According to Li, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the printing and dyeing industry face multiple pressures, including shrinking demand from major markets like Europe and the U.S., rising labor and material costs, exchange rate fluctuations, and shifting trade demands leading to lower prices. He stressed that these issues are not just financial but a combination of various factors. With the government's policy adjustments, the industry is now hoping that financial institutions and local governments will quickly implement supportive measures to drive overall progress. Li pointed out that 2009 presents a critical moment for the industry to shift from a quantity-driven model to a quality-focused one. The future direction involves accelerating technological innovation, enhancing product development capabilities, and improving clean production technologies. The goal is to build a low-resource, low-pollution, high-value-added industrial path that aligns economic growth with environmental protection. To achieve this, the printing and dyeing industry must embrace "innovation" across all areas. Why is innovation still the main keyword this year? Li explained that the global financial crisis has led to a sharp decline in international market demand, fueling trade protectionism and worsening the trade environment. As a result, companies are under pressure from order reductions, price drops, and stricter environmental regulations. The only way forward is through continuous innovation and delivering real results. While companies can't change the external environment, they can focus on internal improvements and breakthroughs in key technologies. In addition to technological innovation, two major thresholds must be crossed: environmental protection and social responsibility. The printing and dyeing process generates a significant amount of wastewater, making it a critical issue for sustainability. Li noted that while no single sewage treatment technology is perfect, the challenge lies in applying existing methods effectively based on different types of wastewater. Many companies lack targeted approaches, resulting in poor treatment outcomes and wasted resources. Some also invest in overly complex solutions, leading to high costs and operational strain. This year, the association aims to promote advanced treatment technologies and provide tailored support to SMEs. Beyond environmental concerns, Li also highlighted the importance of people-oriented management. Balancing profit with social responsibility is essential for building a harmonious society. Companies must share the benefits of growth with employees, boost morale, and foster a positive internal environment to drive long-term success. In response to the financial crisis, the China Printing and Dyeing Industry Association is working on establishing an early warning system to better track and guide enterprises. This initiative aims to help businesses stay informed about domestic and international policies and market trends, reducing risks and improving decision-making. To fully implement the revitalization plan, the association has focused on five key areas this year: 1. Strengthening domestic market development and reducing reliance on exports and investment. 2. Promoting technological progress and industrial upgrading through key projects. 3. Guiding enterprises of different sizes to build core competitiveness and deepen product development. 4. Encouraging brand strategies and protecting intellectual property rights. 5. Enhancing industry services, especially in central and western regions, to support technical cooperation, information sharing, and business collaboration among SMEs. These efforts reflect the industry’s commitment to transformation, sustainability, and long-term growth.
