Experts point jade investment identification tips

More and more consumers are showing a strong interest in jade, not only for its beauty but also for its cultural and investment value. Experts recommend that everyday buyers can use simple techniques to identify genuine jade before making a purchase.

Zheng Jian, head of the Fujian Baoyu Stone Quality Supervision and Inspection Station, explains that there are approximately one or two hundred types of jade available on the market. However, most consumers tend to prefer two main categories: Burmese jadeite and Hetian jade. Each type has different quality grades—such as A-grade, B-grade, and C-grade Burmese jade—and it's advisable to get professional testing from an accredited lab if you're unsure about the authenticity or quality. Before purchasing, it's helpful for consumers to learn about the classifications and unique features of each type of jade.

"One of the key factors is color," Zheng says. "Green, ochre (a yellowish-red tone), and purple are popular colors in jade. There’s also colorless or glassy jade known as 'white jade,' which is highly valued." According to Zheng, when buying jade, good color and high translucency—often referred to as "jade clarity"—are important indicators of quality. The best jade is naturally beautiful and well-formed.

The characteristics of Hetian jade and jadeite differ significantly. "Hetian jade originates from Hetian in Xinjiang, China, but according to national standards, all nephrite jade is now classified as Hetian jade," Zheng explains. Many buyers pay close attention to the origin of the jade. However, just because an appraisal report states that a piece is "Hetian jade" doesn't necessarily mean it comes from Hetian itself. Today, Hetian jade is commonly found in regions such as Xinjiang, Qinghai, Russia, and even South Korea. The highest quality Hetian jade still comes from the original Hetian area. When purchasing Hetian jade, buyers should look for a smooth, glossy surface and a milky white appearance. If it feels oily and is very white, it's likely to be of high quality.

In addition to color and transparency, other factors like texture, weight, and craftsmanship also play a role in determining the value of jade. Whether you're looking for a personal collection or an investment, taking the time to understand these qualities can help ensure you make a wise and informed purchase.
